Defining Fashion

The standard way of thinking about fashionistas is that they are vain, unintelligent, shallow, and are clueless of real world matters. The stereotypical fashionista identity popular culture has influenced has made some people think fashion is a way to hide internal insecurities with glamour.

However, when I think of fashionistas, I think Alexander Mcqueen, a British fashion designer who is known for his tailoring, bold designs that have changed the world of fashion, and jaw-dropping runway shows. Mcqueen is an artist because he communicates an emotional and philosophical idea through his work. Fashion is simply a means of creative interpretation therefore, art.

When I met new friends in Portland upon my arrival from Hawaii, they called me a fashionista because of my interest in fashion. The high-pitched incredulity of “you spend your time thinking about fashion?” made me feel self-conscious when I read fashion magazines and blogs because media has portrayed this identity as unintelligent.

Currently, Kate Moss is considered the fashionista of our generation. Her fame and reputation has taken a part in the stereotype of fashionistas if you read about her controversial party lifestyle,the stereotype lies within Kate Moss’s reputation. So thanks Kate.



But the truth is, the way one dresses does not establish the type of person you are or your emotional stability. People like familiarity therefore negative feelings become associated with those who do not fit the standard mold of cultural conformity.
Fashion does not mean, ‘personal style’, fashion is another form of expression that has motives to be explored and critiques.
As long as we continue to wear clothing, there will always be an acceptance or rejection of fashion.
